€10,000 grant funding approved for Galway

Press Release - 29 March 2010

Childminding Grants announced

Great news for Galway Childminders with the announcement that €10,000 has been allocated through the Childminding Development Grant (CMDG) Scheme.  To date Galway City & County Childcare Committee has distributed €70,000 to eligible Childminders under this scheme. It has been one of the great successes of Galway Childcare Committee that Childminders continue to improve their services and this grant allows them the opportunity to purchase new toys, equipment or safety features to upgrade their services.

Keeping records also plays a huge part in the development of a quality service.  With this in mind Fiona Kelly, HSE Pre-School Services Officer was invited to launch a special resource to over 40 Childminders attending the Seminar.  The record-keeping folder is an invaluable resource for Childminders, and can be used to file registration forms; policies & procedures; fire safety statement; insurance information; consent forms, etc.  Fiona advises that "records are vital to compliance, and this record-keeping folder is an invaluable asset to any Childminding service from the point of view of a Pre-School Inspector; allowing Childminders to keep their essential records within easy access."

Speaking at the Seminar, Colette Coughlan, Childminder Advisory Officer invited all Childminders to avail of the resource: "these handy record-keeping folders can be collected from the Galway City & County Childcare Committee offices and we encourage all Childminders to avail of the opportunity of having a convenient and colourful folder in which to store their essential records."

At present, there are 127 childminders notified to Galway City & County Childcare Committee, as well as 44 notified to the HSE. It is a profession that is becoming increasingly popular, with 164 childminders or potential childminders in the pre-development stage.  In order to cater to the needs of Childminders in particular, Galway City & County Childcare Committee employs a Childminder Advisory Officer.  The role of the advisor is to support all childminders, including those who care for three or fewer preschool children and those who are notified to the HSE. All Childminders are encouraged to notify the Galway City & County Childcare Committee of their service so that they can take advantage of the many supports available to them.

Childminders are invited to collect a FREE record-keeping folder from the Galway City & County Childcare Committee office between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.
