National Childminders' Week: 28th March – 3rd April
Over €125,000 allocated to Childminders in Galway
As part of its celebration of National Childminders’ Week, which runs from 28th March – 3rd April, The Galway City & County Childcare Committee has announced a total of €125,000 in start up grants allocated to childminders in Galway. These grants have been allocated since the development of the National Childminding Initiative and further funding is still available to local childminders. This initiative provides supports for childminders and for people interested in becoming childminders and is administered locally by the Childcare Committee.
Sheila Garrity, Childminder Advisory Officer with the Galway Childcare Committee said “Síolta – Watering the seeds of Quality in Childminding – is the theme of National Childminders’ Week and we have worked very hard this year in making contact with local childminders and assisting them with quality awareness and good practice. When Childminders complete our Quality Awareness Programme, they can avail of a capital grant of up to €1,000 under the Childminder Development Grant Scheme. Since its inception, over 150 small start up grants totaling over €125,000 has been given to local childminders. With further funding still available, we think that’s worth celebrating!”
As part of the National Childminders’ Week celebrations, a number of special events are taking place around Galway City, including a party at the Ballybane Community Centre with Gymboree and a celebration lunch for Childminders and Children. In Tuam the monthly play morning will be held at Go Banana’s and the Childcare Committee will also host a special Childminders Dinner at the House Hotel in Spanish Parade.
Mary Giblin, Coordinator of the Galway City & County Childcare Committee said “ Over 70% of parents of pre-school children who use childcare will use a childminder. For these families in which both parents work outside the home, Childminders will be the largest supply of formal and informal childcare. With National Childminders’ Week we are paying homage to the important role Childminders play in local community and encouraging more childminders to contact the Committee.”
The Galway City and County Childcare Committee assists the development of a wide range of integrated, high quality accessible and affordable childcare services for children in the City and County areas and childminding is one such option for families. The Childcare Committee also offers a range of supports to childminders including training, networking opportunities, advice and support in setting up a new or in operating an existing service.
