Childcare: What parents should look for
Galway City & County Childcare Committee - Press Release - July 23rd 2013
Choosing suitable childcare is a hugely important decision for parents and one that can have a huge impact on their lives. Selecting the ideal setting depends on a variety of issues, including the needs of the child and the parents’ schedules.
Galway City & County Childcare Committee - who co-ordinate and assist the development of childcare services locally and provide information and resources for parents - encourage parents to visit a number of services to become familiar with the various options available.
Mary Giblin, Co-ordinator, Galway City & County Childcare Committee advises that “there are various childcare options available, ranging from full day care to childminding. All crèches and part-time childcare services should be notified to HSE Pre-school Services. In relation to childminders, the guidelines state that if a Childminder is minding more than three pre-school children, then they must notify HSE Pre-school Services. We also encourage parents to ask for the service’s latest HSE Pre-school Inspection Report”.
Parents who are searching for a happy and safe childcare environment will take into account the number of children attending a service, their age and the amount of time they spend in the service.
Here are some more points to consider:
Does the service feel welcoming to both parent and child?
Does the atmosphere seem to be warm and caring?
Is there good interaction between staff and children?
What type of qualifications do the staff have?
Is the Manager / Assistant Manager on the premises at all times?
Are the premises clean, bright, well lit and well ventilated?
Are the toys and equipment clean and well looked after?
Is there space for the children to play, both inside and outside?
Are the premises safe and secure?
What happens if my child becomes ill or has an accident?
The Choosing Childcare: A Parent’s Guide booklet and video may be viewed on the Galway City & County Childcare Committee website: www.galwaychildcare.com, which offers a wide range of information and resources in relation to childcare.
Parents know more about their child’s individual needs than anybody else and should follow their gut instinct when selecting a childcare setting. A service with a caring and friendly atmosphere and plenty of space where children can learn and discover their world through play can nurture your child’s development and social skills.
A childcare service should always be a welcoming, interesting and exciting place, where children feel free to express themselves and develop their skills in child-friendly surroundings.
