Galway City & County Childcare Committee
Annual Childcare Conference
Galway Bay Hotel, Saturday, 4th December 2010
Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Galway City & County Childcare Committee
This year Patricia Broadhead, Professor of Playful Learning at Leeds Metropolitan University will be a special guest speaker at the annual Childcare Conference. Pat has researched traditional areas of play provision in early years settings - sand, water, role play etc and observing their potential for bringing children together in co-operative play. From this work emerged 'the whatever you want it to be place', an open-ended role play area with flexible resources which stimulates high levels of co-operative play for both boys and girls.
This free play area within childcare services gives children the freedom to create their own environment, not only enhancing their communication and social skills, but also allowing them to achieve greater literacy and numeracy skills.
Her presentation: Communication, Play and Relationships in the Early Years will further explore the concept of "the whatever you want it to be place".

Galway City & County Childcare Committee are delighted to welcome Anne O'Connor, Child Clinical Psychologist and founder of www.rollercoaster.ie to this year's conference. With over 20 years experience, she has dealt with a diverse range of family-related issues in a practice offering psychological services to young children. Her talk entitled: Communication that works – Providers and Parents setting the framework for happy childcare will explore the setting up a clear communication system between childcare provider and parents to enhance the child's experience in any childcare setting.
One of the basic points she will be making is that good communication is the key ingredient to any successful relationship and Anne will then outline the characteristics of good communication.
